Life right now

Life is crazy. Things completely change so quickly, without warning. So far this summer I’ve had many things change.

There are two things in particular I want to highlight, one being my journey to better health, the other being our new furry addition to our family.

For a while now I have had it on my heart to get another dog. I had prayed about it, talked about it with my husband, went back and forth with the idea several times. We mainly wanted someone Lucas can play with and be wild.

I learned real quick from Earl, farmers don’t pay for pets. Chesney (our terrier mix) and Leo (our male cat) were both free. I had been researching dog breeds and had my mind-set on a Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever. I was up later than normal on Friday night reading in my bed. I finished a chapter and decided to browse through Facebook, because let’s be real, I have a social media addiction. A friend on Facebook had just posted saying she had two dogs that she needed to re-home due to the fear of not being able to give them the attention they deserve.

One of those dogs, was 2-year-old, Willow. You guys, I MELTED.

Willow was brought to our home Saturday evening, and our entire family fell in love with her. She instantly became Lucas’s new best friend and we’re so thankful that she has come into our family.

The health and nutrition transformation of my life right now is not as exciting as Willow, but it’s a pretty big deal to me. I’ve posted before about how my biggest victory-to-date has been establishing the realization that food was my emotional drug of choice. I was just as dependent on fast food when I was upset, or stressed, as anyone else is with any other type of substance. When I celebrated, I ate. When I was upset, I ate. When I had a stressful hard day, I ate. The cycle continued for years. The first step for me was to transform how I viewed food. I now view it as fuel and nutrition for my body and my mind, not food for the temporary satisfaction.

My two main tools in this journey have been my FitBit and the myfitnesspal app. I whole-heartedly mean it when I say that my FitBit has changed my life. This little device has renewed motivation within myself that I have not felt in a decade. Partnered with myfitnesspal, which is basically a food journal, I have overall dropped 40+ lbs and inches off of various parts of my body.

I encourage anyone who wants to be healthier to start with purchasing a FitBit. If you’re unsure, you can usually find used trackers pretty cheap on eBay. I have the Charge HR. I like having the watch-like interface. If I had a tracker that did not have a watch interface, I would definitely have to wear a watch along with it. The only negative is that the Charge HR is not waterproof like the Flex 2 is. I’ve considered switching, but I’m hesitant due to the watch interface.

In the past month or so I’ve also ventured into the FitStar app. It’s the sister-app of FitBit and it contains workouts. You choose a trainer, and you can do personalized workouts in your own home. They are quick, convenient, and effective workouts.

No matter where you are on your journey, you have already completed the most difficult part, you’ve decided to start. If you do decide to take the FitBit route, you will be able to add friends who also have the tracker and you can complete in friendly competitions and step challenges. You can also join in community groups with other FitBit users throughout the world for encouragement and motivation.

I hope that everyone is having a fantastic summer. Make sure you get outside as often as possible and explore everything you can. You will be amazed at what it does for your soul! Gods creation of wonder is astounding and you can only be a part of it if you get out there and explore! If you need any ideas for local spots, send me a message on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. (There’s that social media addiction again…)
